03.17.18Fresh Perspective--GPT in concert

Lao Tzu told us that ritual is the “husk of true faith," and may become the “beginning of chaos." But from that chaos arises a revolution, and the world is born anew. The established became the norm because of popular support. But after a while, if nothing changes to fit the changing tides, sometimes a revolution is born. In this concert, from many perspectives, you will hear how something fresh and new, or exciting and dangerous, comes from attempts at maintaining what was once original but is now staid.

09.30.17Classical Music’s Asian Revolution (solo recital)

In the late 1800s—exactly when the Romantic Period was roiling with emotion—the Western world was shaken up by the revolutionary Paris Exhibition. There, artists were amazed and moved by the great art of the East. Forever changed were the lives of composers like Debussy and Ravel; and they were inspired to follow a brand new mode of expression. In this recital, you will hear both sides of this revolution: great music of Asia, and the Western music it influenced.
